Push Me Pull You 2013
corrugated cardboard, drinking straws, bubble wrap Push Me Pull You' was made and presented as a small collection of exhibits intended to speak to us of our ambivalences and of the grey areas in which we reside. It is based around the notion of 'care' in the broadest sense and the works are made out of materials that were both improbable (ie a cardboard wheelchair) but also generally associated with packing materials (ie a tv made from bubble wrap). The pieces were individually titled ('Blow' - beer bottles made from drinking straws; 'Turn On' - tv made from bubble wrap; 'Push Me Pull You' - wheelchair made from cardboard) but collectively came together as 'Push Me Pull You'. 'Push Me Pull You' was made as part of a Hanging Together installation in which each of the exhibiting artists created an 'island'. On my island there was a fine line between empowerment and lack of control. 'Islands' was installed at Gallery North, North College, Glasgow. |

Dreamhouse 2003
wood, wire, tin, acrylic ‘Dreamhouse’ was based on the idea of the house as a ‘machine for living in’. I invented a lo-tech mechanical house (in the form of a doll’s house) that referenced the history of Culross Palace, the family that created it and the trades that contributed to the development of the surrounding area. Made for the ‘Salt’ installation in Culross Palace, Fife. |

The Rest of Your Life 2009
wood, bubble wrap, tin, newspaper Vanitas (Latin) means ‘emptiness’ - loosely translated corresponds to ‘the meaningless of earthly life and the transient nature of vanity. The Rest Of Your Life was a piece of work exploring journeys in the broadest sense. Based in Old Kirkgate/ Greenside Cemetery, Alloa it took as it’s starting point the notion of death as a journey from one life into the next (whether simply the physical transformation of the body or a spiritual passage into another world). It was presented as a small number of Memento Mori’s, each based on the form of the vanity case. Each case is created from materials relating to travel/ transportation. The Rest of Your Life was installed in the Mar Mausoleum as part of Hanging Together/ Homecoming 2009 installation |

Obit - a Fictional Account of the LIves of the Tolbooth 2001
stone, hand-printed book, perspex Using old archive records and newspaper articles, I produced an illustrated book that looked at key stages of the Tolbooth’s history from it’s conception over eight centuries ago to the beginning of it’s new stage as an arts venue for Stirling. I developed a number of characters speaking in the first person that recalled their connection with the Tolbooth - from a tradesman in 1675, worried that he might lose his place in society for not wearing the appropriate hat to a woman recalling the remembrance day celebrations in 1999. Obit formed part the touring exhibition, The Commoun Kist by Hanging Together, commissioned by Stirling Council in 2001 |
Smoking or Non-smoking 2012
dvd projection (4 mins - looped)
Smoking or Non-smoking was made for installation in the cafe/ bar area at the Tolbooth, Stirling. It aimed to re-create the smoky bar that is now a figment of the past, suggesting that perhaps the virtual world can indeed supersede the need for actual experience.
I filmed the smoke generated by cigarettes and then 'choreographed' the footage to create a sequence that was then looped. It is very much a 'sketch' of the idea that I had.
Smoking or Non-smoking was installed in the Tolbooth, Stirling, February 2012

Archive 1999
wood, steel, coal, paper, plastic, water
Archive took the theme of a history book preserved in a display case and mounted on a lectern. The lectern necessitated a certain approach to the reading of the piece, that of a formal read, but also suggested the performance of reading. The book contained objects, visual symbols encassed in steel pages. The objects are presented as museum pieces, their value defined by the uniqueness and context within which they are read. They reference soundbite historical fact and hearsay, broad historical themes such as commerce, union, ambition and territory.
Archive was installed as part of the Solar Project with Hanging Together in 1999. In 2000, Archive was selected to tour the UK as part of the Pagemakers exhibition curated by Gracefield Arts Centre, Dumfries.
